Publisher’s Picks – Best Mezcal Brands

In each issue of The Tasting Panel Magazine, the Publisher and Executive Editor, Meridith May, selects her favorite wines and spirits for the month.

This month, Sacacuento Anejo Mezcal was given four kisses, sending Merideth “head over heals in love” with one of the best mezcal brands in America.

History of Fine Mezcal

In the early 1920’s Emilio and Agripina Maldonado farmed land north of Oaxaca (Rancho Buenaventura) where they raised their ten children and served as leaders in the local town of Santa Maria Tinu. As part of Emilio’s work, he dabbled in mezcal when he could grow agave on his land.

As travelers would pass through their ranch, they would stop and taste Emilio’s mezcal. As they sat and shared the mezcal they would tell great stories. Those who told the best stories were called “Sacacuento.”

Where to Buy Fine Mezcal

Sacacuento Mezcal is available at many fine locations, including online.

Sacacuento Mezcal wins Double Gold at the 2012 New York World Wine and Spirits Competition“Every brand feels their beverage is the best it can be on the market today! But how do they prove it? How does an educated consumer have the confidence to pick the best? The 2012 NY Wine & Spirits Competition’s goal is to establish a clear cut method by which wine and spirit brands can be ranked by the experts in the industry. It is the only wine and spirits competition in the world that is associated with a recognized tradeshow event called The Bar and Restaurant Show.

This new standard of competence is our primary goal to demonstrate to the buying public how the experts interpret each brands overall quality.

The integrity of The New York World Wine and Spirits Competition starts with the quality and probity of our Judges and where it takes place. No other competition operates “out in the open” during a trade event for the industry. This is our interpretation of integrity. Pure transparency as the entire competition will be at The Bar and Restaurant Show for everyone to observe.” http://www.nyworldwineandspiritscompetition.com/why-enter

Step One: Cooking Agave in the Horno

The pinas you see in the photo above are used to make Sacacuento Mezcal. These espadin agave come fro mour ranch, Rancho BuenaVentura in Oaxaca Mexico.

Rancho Buenaventura is five minutes south of the city of Nochixtlan, in the rural area of Oaxaca known as La Mixteca.

RDue to dry climate our Agave plants mature in 8-10 years. We have began to harvest plants from the crop planted in 2002 and now bake our Agave hearts in earth ovens. We use a Artisan process to assure Authentic and Historical quality results.

Our oven (horno) will bake every 15 days to assure adequate supply to support the Sacacuento brand.

6 Minutes on a Maguey Farm [VIDEO]

Take a six minute tour of Rancho Buenaventura, Oaxaca’s finest maguey farm. Rancho Buenaventura is 40 minutes north of downtown Oaxaca and 10 minutes south of Nochixtlan at highway marker 189. The maguey (agave) on the ranch make Sacacuento Mezcal.

In 1913, Emilio and Agripina Maldonado farmed land north of Oaxaca where they raised their ten children and served as leaders in the local town of Santa Maria Tinu.

As part of Emilio’s work, he dabbled in mezcal when he could grow agave on his land with his 10 children. When the locals would share Emilio’s mezcal, they would share great stories with one another. Those who shared the best stories were called Sacacuento.

Ventura Maldonado (Emilio’s son) migrated to the United States as a teenager, moving to Sacramento California where he became the foreman of a nursery for most of his career. After retirement, he moved back to his parents land and built a home on the property.

Today, Rudy and Claudia (Ventura’s daughter) Favila own this great land of 150 acres named Rancho Buenaventura. Rudy and Claudia have over 90,000 plants on this land and have thousands of agave plants in the ground.

Rancho Buenaventura is being developed into a maguey (mezcal and tequila plant) farm to support the growing demand of Sacacuento.

Rancho Buenaventura is situated approximately 40 minutes north of the mystic ruins of Monte Alban and 40 minutes north of downtown Oaxaca off the super highway. The property is located at kilometer 189 and 190, 10 kilometers before reaching Nochixtlan.

Mexican Bill NOM 186 Could Harm Mezcal Makers

Share

“Currently there are two initiatives that have been proposed that have direct, debilitating effects on a large portion of producers of Agave distillates and harmful possibly irrevocable effects on the agrobiodiversity of Mexico. The projects were proposed by two different organizations. The first proposal from the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) brands the word agave for the exclusive use of producers in the Appellations of Origin for Tequila (AOT), Mezcal (AOM), and Bacanora (AOB). The second proposal, NOM-186, from the Ministry of Economy regulates the specifications, proof methods, and commercial information of alcoholic beverages produced with species of the genus agave.”1 “”Basically what it comes down to is the big tequila companies trying to push out the boutique tequila and mezcal makers,” says Travis Nass, bartender at Rancho Pinot.

The bill was written on behalf of a group of large, foreign owners of well-known agave spirit brands as a way to “protect consumers” from mislabeled agave-based spirits. But its passage, Nass says, could severely limit mezcal production and hurt owners of small family distilleries who have crafted these products for generations.”2

I am alarmed by this bill as proposed because it restricts the use of the Agave name to the Jalisco region. It was Oaxaca that since 1400′s has been perfecting the use of Agave into Mezcal. Its Comercom the regulatory Agency that verify’s the Pureness of Mezcal, and the bill appears to be an effort to separate this valued practice of High Quality that offends some mixture driven agave purveyors in the Spirits market.I for one stand for for pure certified Mezcal produced in authentic small batch by the loving hands of Oaxaca small family farms. I invite you to do something to help preserve this Fine treasure from Oaxaca.
